Domains in Sri Lanka: the .lk registry, prices, ownership and DNS

A working Sri Lankan domain setup is a .lk (or .com.lk) record at LK Domain Registry, registrant listed as you or your business, and DNS pointing at whichever host you actually use. The direct registry price for a top-level .lk in 2026 is LKR 5,000 per year VAT-inclusive (checked 2026-08-27); authorised agents such as Provider.lk and LankaHost sit between LKR 3,500 and LKR 4,500 for first year and often push you higher at renewal. Hosting is a separate purchase and does not have to sit with the same company.

LK Domain Registry, in one paragraph
LK Domain Registry is the sole administrator of the .lk namespace and has issued .lk addresses since 1990. Every registrar that sells you a .lk domain (Provider.lk, LankaHost, register.lk, srilankahosting.lk and the rest) is either an authorised agent selling into that same registry, or a reseller of an agent. The record itself lives in one central WHOIS database that the registry runs; the agent is a commercial front-end that handles payment, verification and DNS controls. If your agent goes out of business your .lk record does not disappear, you just move it to another agent (or straight back to the registry).
.lk namespaces you will actually consider
Sri Lankan businesses realistically pick between three: top-level .lk, the commercial second-level .com.lk, and (for non-profits) .org.lk. Everything else is either restricted or niche.

Most Sri Lankan small businesses can pick a top-level .lk off the shelf. The .com.lk path is the fallback when the top-level name is taken, and it is materially cheaper (see the price section). Restricted namespaces need a letter, a UGC accreditation, or a government ID.
What a .lk domain costs in 2026
Sri Lankan .lk pricing runs in five registry categories, and the same category costs different amounts depending on whether you buy from the registry or an agent. All figures below are annual and VAT-inclusive at the registry, and are checked against the vendor pages on 2026-08-27.

Two receipts from the same 2026-08-27 check tell the year-one-vs-renewal story: LankaHost lists LKR 3,500 for a first-year Economy .lk but LKR 4,000 for the renewal, while Provider.lk holds a flat LKR 4,500. Direct at the registry vs. going through an agent
LK Domain Registry sells .lk domains directly at the tariff prices above, and about a dozen authorised agents resell into the same registry at their own markup or discount. The trade-off is not price alone; it is turnaround time and support. Direct at the registry is the reference price and the reference process, and it is fine if you are comfortable filing your own paperwork. Agents like LankaHost and Provider.lk operate LK Instant Domain Registration (15 to 30 minutes activation after payment, per LankaHost, checked 2026-08-27) and take payment by local card, which the registry portal does not always handle as smoothly. Every agent lets you register the domain in your own name; there is no technical reason a reseller has to hold your record for you.
The ownership chain (registrant, admin, tech)
Domain "ownership" in the .lk registry is a WHOIS record with three named contacts: the registrant (the legal owner), the administrative contact (the person who receives renewal and policy email), and the technical contact (the person authorised to update DNS). Real problems start when those three roles collapse onto one person who is not you. If your web designer's email is on all three lines, that designer controls renewal, controls policy correspondence, and controls the nameservers. You have paid for the domain and you do not control it.
Fix at registration time: put your business name as registrant, your own director email as admin, and either your own email or the designer's as tech (tech is safe to delegate because it does not authorise transfers). If the domain is already registered against a designer, you request a Change of Registrant through your agent or the registry, backed by a business registration document; it is a slow paper process but a settled one.
The designer-registered mistake and how to unwind it
A designer registering the client's domain under the designer's own account is the single most common domain problem we see in Sri Lanka, and it is almost never malicious; it happens because the designer paid the LKR 4,500 to get the site live and never migrated the record. Six months later the client wants to change designer and the old designer is unresponsive. The registry does have a Change of Registrant process for exactly this case, and both LankaHost and Provider.lk publish support paths for it. Expect a few days of paperwork, a business registration certificate, and a small transfer fee. You do not have to lose the domain.
Domain and hosting are separate systems
A .lk domain record and a web hosting account are two independent purchases connected by DNS. The domain record at LK Domain Registry stores nameserver pointers (NS records), and the nameservers store everything else (A, AAAA, MX, TXT, CNAME). You can buy the domain from Provider.lk, host the site at Hostinger, and route email through Google Workspace, all at once, because each layer only cares about the layer above and below it. Where this matters day to day: switching hosts does not touch the domain, and switching domain registrar does not touch the site. Yes. LK Domain Registry has operated the .lk namespace since 1990 and every reseller sells into the same registry, so the record itself is durable. Failure modes we see are almost always about who is listed as registrant, or about missed renewals, not the registry side.
How much does a .lk domain cost per year?
The LK Domain Registry price for the standard top-level .lk (Economy CAT2) is LKR 5,000 per year VAT-inclusive, checked 2026-08-27. Authorised agents undercut that; Provider.lk lists LKR 4,500 and LankaHost lists LKR 3,500 first year with a renewal of LKR 4,000, both checked 2026-08-27.
Do I have to buy hosting from the registrar I bought the .lk domain from?
No. The .lk domain and hosting are independent purchases and the registrar cannot restrict where you point the nameservers. Buying them together is a convenience, not a technical requirement.
Who actually owns my .lk domain?
Whoever is listed as registrant in the WHOIS record for the domain. The name and email on that record control renewal, transfer and DNS delegation, so the safest default is your own name or your registered business name with your own contact email.
Can a foreigner or foreign company register a .lk?
Yes for the open .lk and .com.lk namespaces, which are open registration. The restricted namespaces .edu.lk, .ac.lk, .sch.lk and .gov.lk require documented eligibility that a foreign entity typically will not have.
