.lk domain: what it is, who runs it and when to pick one

A .lk domain is Sri Lanka's country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), administered by LK Domain Registry since 1990. The open namespaces (top-level .lk, plus .com.lk, .net.lk and .org.lk) are available to any registrant worldwide; restricted namespaces such as .edu.lk and .gov.lk need documented eligibility. Direct at the registry, a standard top-level .lk costs LKR 5,000 per year VAT-inclusive (checked 2026-08-27); authorised agents undercut that by LKR 500 to LKR 1,500 depending on category.
What a .lk domain actually is
A .lk domain is a record in the LK Domain Registry database that maps a name (say colombobakery.lk) to a set of nameservers, which in turn resolve to the IP addresses of your web host and email host. The .lk part is the ccTLD, and ICANN delegates that string to LK Domain Registry as the sole administrator for Sri Lanka. Google treats .lk as a geo-targeting signal for Sri Lanka in Search Console and in its country-relevance heuristics, though a ccTLD alone is not a ranking guarantee (our .lk vs .com page has the full argument on that).
LK Domain Registry, and why the "agent" list matters
LK Domain Registry is the sole administrator for .lk and has issued .lk addresses since 1990, per the registry's own about page (checked 2026-08-27). Around a dozen authorised agents resell into that registry. The list matters because a "reseller of a reseller" is not the same as an agent: an authorised agent (Provider.lk since 2009, LankaHost since 2009 and among others) can push a record directly into the registry portal, while a non-agent reseller has to route through one of them, adding a step and, when things go wrong, a support handoff you cannot see. The current authorised-agent list is published on the registry site and is the safest sanity check before you buy.
.lk namespaces and who qualifies for each
Sri Lankan .lk splits into open second-level namespaces and restricted ones. The open ones (.lk, .com.lk, .net.lk, .org.lk) are what business sites actually consider; the restricted ones require documentation.

The one-line rule: if you are a Sri Lankan small business, buy the top-level .lk if it is free at LKR 5,000, or a .com.lk at LKR 1,000 if not. Everything else is either niche or eligibility-gated.
Base pricing, direct and via agent
A .lk domain has two prices: the registry tariff and the agent price. The registry tariff for a standard top-level .lk (Economy CAT2) is LKR 5,000 per year VAT-inclusive, checked at domains.lk on 2026-08-27. Provider.lk sells the same category for LKR 4,500, LankaHost lists LKR 3,500 first year with a LKR 4,000 renewal, and register.lk lists LKR 4,100, all checked the same day. The gap between LKR 3,500 and LKR 5,000 for the same registry record is not a quality difference; it is an agent's willingness to loss-lead on year one to earn hosting, email and renewal revenue later.
Who should pick a .lk (and who probably should not)
A .lk is the right default for any business that serves Sri Lankan customers as its primary audience: a Colombo restaurant, a Kandy law firm, an LKR-billing SaaS, a school (with .sch.lk), a non-profit (with .org.lk). It sends a strong entity-relevance signal to Google for Sri Lanka intent and it reads as a local address to a Sri Lankan customer typing in a browser. A .lk is the wrong default for a business whose audience is genuinely international from day one: a global SaaS, an outsourcing shop selling to US buyers, a personal portfolio for a job hunt outside Sri Lanka. In those cases a .com carries stronger global recognition and dodges the Sri-Lanka-only entity signal that Google will otherwise infer.
The "reseller" story you should know
A "reseller of an agent" is a common Sri Lankan setup where a small web-design shop bundles a .lk domain into a package. Technically the record still lives at LK Domain Registry, but the trail runs client to shop to authorised agent to registry, with each hop adding a support-tier delay when something breaks. It is fine at day one and painful in year three when the shop is unresponsive and you need a DNS change over a weekend. Where price is close, buy from the authorised agent directly; you keep one fewer link in the chain and you keep the login.
