Quick answer

For most Sri Lankan self-builders, WordPress on quality shared hosting is the best value: total year-one cost of about LKR 15,000 to 30,000, full portability, and clean integration with PayHere or WebXPay if the site later adds a store. Pick Shopify (from USD 29 per month, checked 27 August 2026) only when a serious store is the primary goal; pick Wix (from USD 17 per month) when zero technical work matters more than year-three lock-in. WebsiteHosting.lk is an independent Sri Lankan guide to hosting, website cost, domains, builders and ecommerce.

What a website builder actually gives you

A website builder is a hosted editor, template library and hosting stack bundled into one monthly bill. Wix, Squarespace and Shopify all give you a drag-and-drop or block-based editor, a template collection, a checkout or contact system, and the servers that answer when a Sri Lankan visitor types your address. Self-hosted WordPress unbundles this: the editor is free, the hosting is a separate purchase from Hostinger or SiteGround, and the checkout is a plugin like WooCommerce. The trade-off is straightforward: bundled builders are simpler on day one and more expensive on year three, self-hosted WordPress is the reverse.

The myth this hub argues against

Sri Lankan business-owner forums still repeat the line "just use Wix, WordPress is too technical." Wix is not technical, that part is true. Wix is also USD 17 to 39 per month, invoiced in USD to a Sri Lankan card that pays 3 to 4 percent in FX and card fees on every charge, and locked to the Wix platform after year one. WordPress on a Hostinger or SiteGround plan is one setup afternoon of learning, then LKR 6,000 to 20,000 per year, LKR-billable through most local resellers, and portable to any host that speaks PHP. The right question is not "which is easier today" but "which of these two do I still want to be paying in 2029".

Pick the builder by what the site actually is

Use-case fit beats price for a first buyer. A one-page brochure for a Kandy dental practice does not need Shopify Basic and its USD 29 monthly bill; a Colombo boutique that ships fifteen orders a day does not belong on Wix ecommerce. Match the tool to the workload. A blog-driven content site lives on WordPress because no other platform matches its content model. A store that will run Meta ads and needs real reporting lives on Shopify or WooCommerce. A five-page brochure lives wherever setup is fastest, which for most Sri Lankan owners is Wix.

Realistic first-year LKR cost by builder

First-year cost is where the Sri Lankan buyer usually gets surprised. WordPress on Hostinger Premium runs about USD 2.99 per month billed annually plus a .com or .lk domain, which lands at roughly LKR 15,000 to 25,000 for year one at USD/LKR 320 (checked 27 August 2026). Wix Core sits near USD 29 per month regular, about LKR 111,000 per year at the same rate. Shopify Basic including the domain and one paid app clears LKR 130,000 to 160,000 the first year. Squarespace Business is close to Shopify. Hostinger Website Builder undercuts them all at about LKR 12,000 to 15,000 for a small site, but caps at a level most business sites outgrow within a year.

.lk domain compatibility across builders

Every builder on this page accepts a .lk domain. The mechanism is DNS, not the builder: LK Domain Registry (also written IPS Sri Lanka on second reference in our copy) hands you the DNS panel when the domain is registered, and the builder gives you either a set of nameservers to paste in or an A record and CNAME. Wix and Squarespace both support connecting an external domain on any paid plan. Shopify supports it on every plan. WordPress works with .lk anywhere. The registrar keeps ownership regardless of the builder chosen, which means switching platforms later never costs the domain.

Lock-in is what you pay for in year three

Lock-in is the least-priced feature of a builder and the most expensive. Wix content exports as an XML file with no working template. Shopify exports products as CSV but not the theme code. Squarespace exports a limited XML. WordPress migrates entirely, database and files, from any cPanel host to any other cPanel host in an afternoon. The rule of thumb: rank builders by how easy they are to leave, not how easy they are to join. Any tool that is easy to join and hard to leave prices the exit into the monthly bill for as long as you stay.

Frequently asked questions

Which website builder is cheapest for a Sri Lankan small business?

Self-hosted WordPress is cheapest total cost of ownership: LKR 6,000 to 20,000 a year for domain plus quality shared hosting, versus USD 17 to 39 a month for Wix Core through Business. WordPress needs more setup time but wins on year-two economics.

Can I use Shopify with a Sri Lankan payment gateway?

Yes. PayHere and WebXPay both publish Shopify apps that hand off checkout to their hosted page, so LKR settles into a Sri Lankan bank account. Shopify still bills you in USD and applies a small extra transaction fee on non-Shopify Payments providers, currently 2% on Basic (checked 27 August 2026).

Do website builders support .lk domains?

Every mainstream builder supports connecting a .lk domain by DNS. Wix, Shopify and Squarespace all accept a nameserver or A/CNAME record change from LK Domain Registry or any reseller. The registrar keeps ownership; the builder just resolves traffic.

Is Hostinger Website Builder good enough for a business site?

For a single-page or five-page brochure site, yes. Hostinger Website Builder ships from USD 2.99 per month with hosting and a free domain year one (checked 27 August 2026). It is not the right tool for content sites over twenty pages, real ecommerce, or bookings.

Can I migrate off a hosted builder later?

Content migrates, design does not. Wix and Squarespace let you export text, images and blog posts, but the templates, animations and page structure have to be rebuilt on the new platform. WordPress and other self-hosted stacks are the only genuinely portable choice.
