Quick answer

To launch a Sri Lankan online store: (1) register the business and open a matching current account, (2) pick the platform - WooCommerce on WordPress for cheapest total cost, Shopify for fastest launch, (3) buy a .lk or .com domain and hosting, (4) apply for a gateway (PayHere, WebXPay or iPay), (5) load products and set shipping zones, (6) test one live end-to-end order in production, (7) go live and start marketing. The "just start selling on Instagram" advice we argue against leaves the merchant with no gateway, no analytics and no way to run paid ads back to a site of their own.

Step 1: business registration and a matching bank account

Business registration is the slowest step so it goes first. Register a sole proprietorship at the Divisional Secretariat for LKR 1,500 to 3,000 and 1 to 2 weeks, or a Private Limited company at the Department of the Registrar of Companies (ROC) for LKR 20,000 to 40,000 all-in and 2 to 4 weeks. Open a current account at HNB, Sampath, Commercial Bank or another Sri Lankan bank in the same registered name. PayHere, WebXPay and iPay all check the business name against the bank account name before activating a merchant, so a mismatch bounces the application and adds a week.

Step 2: pick WooCommerce or Shopify

Platform choice sets everything downstream. WooCommerce on WordPress runs on any decent shared host, takes PayHere or WebXPay through official plugins with no per-transaction platform surcharge, and gives full data ownership. Year-one platform cost lands at LKR 40,000 to 100,000 including hosting and a paid gateway plan. Shopify is faster to launch and smoother to run day-to-day, costs USD 29 per month for Basic (about LKR 9,280, checked 27 August 2026), and adds a 2 percent Shopify surcharge on every transaction because Shopify Payments is not available in Sri Lanka. Head-to-head: Shopify vs WooCommerce.

Step 3: domain and hosting

Domain and hosting are the second-slowest step, mostly because DNS propagation waits are annoying and irreversible mistakes hurt. Register a .lk domain at LK Domain Registry or a reseller (LKR 3,500 to 6,500 per year, checked 27 August 2026), or a .com at Namecheap or a local reseller. For WooCommerce, buy Hostinger Premium at USD 2.99 per month, SiteGround StartUp at USD 3.99, or Cloudways from USD 11 per month when the store is real. For Shopify, hosting is inside the plan. Point the domain by nameservers, wait 4 to 24 hours for propagation, and issue SSL from the host once DNS shows green.

Step 4: apply for the payment gateway

Gateway onboarding is the second bottleneck after business registration. PayHere Lite activates in 2 to 5 business days with the registration certificate, bank account details and a signed merchant agreement; monthly fee is LKR 0 and rate is 3.30 percent per transaction (checked 27 August 2026). PayHere Plus at LKR 3,990 per month drops the rate to 2.99 percent. WebXPay Starter is a 12-month LKR 10,000 subscription with per-transaction rates negotiated at onboarding. iPay by Dialog and Sampath Vishwa need a working bank relationship and take 2 to 4 weeks. Step 5: products, categories and shipping zones

Step 6: place one live LKR test order in production

Launch testing is where most first-time Sri Lankan stores skip a step and pay for it. Place one live LKR 100 or LKR 500 order through the real gateway in production, from a phone on Dialog or SLT-Mobitel mobile data, not from the office WiFi. Check that the confirmation email lands, that the gateway settles the LKR into the current account on schedule, that the order shows in the admin, and that the shipping label prints. Sandbox testing catches typos; production testing catches merchant-account-name mismatches, wrong bank routing and dead SMTP credentials.

Step 7: go live and start marketing

Launch is the day the URL becomes public; growth is what comes after. Wire Google Analytics 4 and Search Console before running any paid traffic, submit the sitemap, and set the Meta Pixel or Google Ads tag on every product and checkout page. Sri Lankan store growth in the first quarter usually comes from three channels: existing WhatsApp customer list, Meta ads to a one-product landing page, and organic content ranking for "buy X Sri Lanka" long-tails. Repeat customers pay the best return - the second order costs a tenth of the first.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to launch a Sri Lankan online store?

Business registration takes 1 to 4 weeks, gateway onboarding another 1 to 2 weeks, platform setup and design 2 to 6 weeks. A realistic end-to-end timeline for a small store is 6 to 10 weeks - most of that is paperwork and content, not code.

What is the cheapest legitimate way to start a Sri Lankan store?

WooCommerce on WordPress with Hostinger Premium hosting (USD 2.99 per month, checked 27 August 2026), a .lk domain, and a PayHere Lite plan (LKR 0 monthly, 3.30 percent per transaction). Year-one platform cost lands at LKR 20,000 to 40,000 before design and marketing.

Which gateway ships with the least paperwork?

PayHere Lite has the lightest onboarding for a first store - business registration, one bank account, and a signed merchant agreement, with no monthly commitment (checked 27 August 2026). WebXPay Starter requires a 12-month subscription up front. Sampath Vishwa and iPay require bank relationships.

Do I need a courier account before launch?

You need a shipping plan, not necessarily a courier account. Small stores start with self-delivery in Colombo or Domex prepaid tokens; Aramex and Pronto negotiate rates once volume exists. Ninja Van has been consolidating in Sri Lanka - check current SLA before signing an exclusive deal.
