Quick answer

The straightforward path for a Sri Lankan website: (1) decide what the site is for, (2) pick the platform - WordPress for most business sites, Wix for zero-code brochures, Shopify or WooCommerce for stores, (3) buy a .lk or .com domain, (4) buy hosting, (5) design and load real content, (6) launch with a checklist, (7) maintain and update. Realistic budget: LKR 15,000 to 30,000 DIY on WordPress, LKR 60,000 to 250,000 with a freelancer, LKR 150,000 to 400,000 for a working ecommerce store (all checked 27 August 2026). The "just build it yourself in a weekend on Wix" pitch, which we argue against here, leaves the owner locked into USD 17 to 39 per month with no exit plan. WebsiteHosting.lk is an independent Sri Lankan guide to hosting, website cost, domains, builders and ecommerce.

Step 1: decide what the site is actually for

Site purpose is the first and most consequential decision. A brochure site builds trust and answers "who are you"; a lead-gen site captures enquiries and sends them to sales; a store sells products directly. Each drives a different stack: a brochure runs on Wix or WordPress with any theme, a lead-gen site on WordPress with a form plugin and analytics, a store on WooCommerce or Shopify with a Sri Lankan gateway wired in. Getting this wrong forces a rebuild at the six-month mark. Every subsequent step in this guide assumes you have named the purpose in one sentence before moving on.

Step 2: pick the platform to match the purpose

Platform choice is where price and time-to-launch trade off against year-two cost. WordPress on Hostinger Premium is the cheapest total cost of ownership and the most portable, at about USD 2.99 per month for hosting plus a .lk or .com domain (checked 27 August 2026). Wix Core at USD 29 per month is the fastest setup with the highest lock-in cost. Shopify Basic at USD 29 per month is the smoothest ecommerce experience but adds a 2 percent Shopify surcharge in Sri Lanka because Shopify Payments is not available here. WooCommerce on WordPress fits Sri Lankan stores that value gateway economics. Head-to-head: best website builders for Sri Lanka.

Step 3: buy the domain in the owner's name

Domain purchase is one of the two irreversible mistakes a first-time Sri Lankan owner can make. Register the .lk or .com in the business owner's or company's name, never the freelancer's or the agency's - the registrar record is the record of ownership. A .lk domain runs LKR 3,500 to 6,500 per year at LK Domain Registry (also written IPS Sri Lanka on second reference) or a Sri Lankan reseller; a .com is USD 10 to 15 per year at Namecheap or Porkbun (checked 27 August 2026). Buy for 2 to 5 years up front if the business plans to keep the name; the renewal is where squatters strike. Detail: .lk vs .com for Sri Lanka.

Step 4: buy hosting priced on renewal, not the intro rate

Hosting is the second irreversible mistake, and the mistake is buying on intro price. Every mainstream host advertises a first-year rate (Hostinger Premium at USD 2.99 per month, SiteGround StartUp at USD 3.99, Namecheap Stellar at USD 1.98) and renews at two to three times that (checked 27 August 2026). Budget on the renewal price from day one and the second invoice does not surprise. For WordPress, Hostinger Premium or SiteGround StartUp is enough until traffic goes serious. For Shopify, hosting is inside the plan. Detail: how to choose web hosting and best web hosting Sri Lanka.

Step 5: design and load real content

Content is what takes the longest and what gets skipped in first-week planning. Real product photos of real inventory, real service descriptions, real client testimonials - not stock images and lorem-ipsum. A Sri Lankan business site needs eight to twenty pages of real content: home, about, services or products, contact, one or two case studies, a returns and refund policy, a privacy note that mentions the Personal Data Protection Act No. 9 of 2022. Install a clean, well-supported theme (Astra, Kadence, Blocksy on WordPress), wire in Google Analytics 4 and Search Console, and set up business email through Google Workspace at LKR 2,000 per user per month or Zoho Mail free tier.

Step 6: the launch checklist

Step 7: maintain and update

Maintenance is a light quarterly rhythm, not a monthly grind. Update WordPress, the theme and plugins once a quarter; test one contact form or one live transaction after each update; verify the daily backup restore actually restores by pulling one down. Refresh content quarterly - a blog post, a product page rewrite, a testimonial update. Watch Search Console for crawl errors and Analytics for a drop in mobile conversion. The site that stays alive is the one that gets checked; the site that goes stale is the one that gets replaced.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a basic Sri Lankan website cost?

Self-built on WordPress plus Hostinger Premium: LKR 15,000 to 30,000 in year one. Freelancer-built small business site: LKR 60,000 to 250,000 one-off plus LKR 15,000 to 30,000 annual running cost. Ecommerce store: LKR 150,000 to 400,000 to build plus LKR 30,000 to 100,000 per year.

How long does a Sri Lankan website take to launch?

A DIY WordPress brochure site launches inside a weekend. A freelancer-built brochure runs 2 to 4 weeks including content revisions. A store adds business registration and gateway onboarding, typically 6 to 10 weeks end-to-end. Delays come from content and paperwork, not code.

What is the very first decision to make?

Decide what the site is for: a brochure that builds trust, a lead generator that captures enquiries, or a store that sells products. That single choice sets platform, hosting tier, domain namespace and budget. Every downstream decision follows from it.

Do I need a .lk domain or is a .com fine?

Both work. .lk is a strong Sri Lankan entity signal and suits businesses selling primarily in Sri Lanka; .com is universal and suits businesses that might sell internationally later. Buying both and pointing one to the other is a common defence against squatters.

Do I need a Sri Lankan host or is international fine?

International hosts like Hostinger, SiteGround and Namecheap outperform most Sri Lankan hosts on price, feature parity and edge speed with Cloudflare in front. A Sri Lankan host wins when LKR billing, Sinhala or Tamil support, or a local tax invoice is a hard requirement.
