Shopify vs WooCommerce for Sri Lanka

WooCommerce is the better fit for most Sri Lankan stores on year-one cost and gateway economics: LKR 40,000 to 100,000 year one on Hostinger Premium plus PayHere Plus, with no per-transaction platform surcharge on top of the gateway fee. Shopify wins on setup speed, checkout reliability and app ecosystem: about LKR 130,000 to 165,000 year one on Basic, but every transaction adds a 2 percent Shopify surcharge because Shopify Payments is not available in Sri Lanka (checked 27 August 2026). The "Shopify is always the safer choice" recommendation, which we push back on, ignores Sri Lanka-specific gateway economics.
Methodology and Sri Lanka-specific inputs
Comparison inputs come from PayHere's own fee card, WebXPay's own pricing page, Shopify's own pricing page and Hostinger's own hosting page, all checked 27 August 2026. USD figures are converted at USD/LKR 320 for landed cost, with a 3 percent card FX markup on Shopify's monthly invoice. The comparison assumes a small Sri Lankan store shipping 10 to 100 orders per month at an average order value of LKR 5,000, buying a .lk domain and using the vendor's own default theme. Store scale changes the answer; a 500-order-per-month store re-runs the numbers with Shopify Grow at 1 percent surcharge and PayHere Premium at 2.69 percent.

The Sri Lankan cost story, checked
Cost separation is the reason most Sri Lankan stores that keep score end up on WooCommerce. Hostinger Premium at USD 2.99 per month billed annually, a .lk domain at LKR 3,500 to 6,500, and PayHere Plus at LKR 3,990 per month for 2.99 percent transactions sum to a year-one platform cost of about LKR 60,000 to 90,000 (all checked 27 August 2026). Shopify Basic substitutes USD 29 per month for the Hostinger plus WooCommerce stack, adds a 2 percent Shopify surcharge on every transaction because Shopify Payments is not available in Sri Lanka, and lands year one at LKR 130,000 to 165,000. The gap is roughly LKR 70,000 to 90,000 in year one and grows with volume.
Payment gateway fit, side by side
Gateway fit is where Sri Lanka is not America. WooCommerce takes PayHere and WebXPay through official native plugins that talk directly to the gateway API - no platform surcharge on top of the gateway's own fee. Shopify takes the same two gateways through official Shopify apps that also route to the gateway hosted page, but Shopify adds its 2 percent transaction surcharge because Shopify Payments (Shopify's own gateway, absent in Sri Lanka) is not the payment method. On a LKR 100,000 monthly gross, that is LKR 2,000 more paid to Shopify every month, on top of PayHere's 2.99 percent - and it grows linearly with volume.
Choose Shopify when
- The store must launch this week with zero technical work.
- The team refuses to touch hosting, updates or security.
- Monthly Shopify plus surcharge is a rounding error against gross margin.
- Store growth needs Shopify-only apps or Shopify POS integration.
Choose WooCommerce when
- Long-term cost efficiency is worth an afternoon of setup.
- A Sri Lankan WordPress freelancer is available at LKR 5,000 to 15,000 per hour.
- PayHere or WebXPay direct integration without platform surcharge matters.
- The store needs full data and design portability against future platform risk.

Yes, but it is a rebuild, not a copy. Products and customers export cleanly as CSV; the theme, checkout flow and apps rebuild on the WordPress side. Budget LKR 100,000 to 400,000 and 3 to 6 weeks for a small Shopify to WooCommerce migration.
