A single number never tells you what a Sri Lankan website costs. The number moves with who builds it, how many unique layouts they design, and whether copy and product photos are in scope. The table below is the band we see repeated in Sri Lankan proposals in 2026, cross-checked with Register.lk and LankaHost domain-and-hosting bundles and with rate cards we review with client permission.

What actually drives the number up or down
Website cost in Sri Lanka is a product of scope, not a fixed shelf price. Six variables move the LKR figure more than any single design choice, and the smart move is to negotiate on scope before you negotiate on price.
- Unique layouts. A 12-page site with three unique layouts is cheaper than a 6-page site with six. Layouts are the design and development unit, not pages.
- Content ownership. If you supply written copy and product photos, expect the quotation to drop by LKR 20,000 to LKR 80,000. If a copywriter and photographer are in scope, expect it to climb.
- Integrations. PayHere, WebXPay or iPay integration for checkout, a WhatsApp Business handoff, a CRM sync, or courier APIs each add build hours and testing time.
- Language coverage. Sinhala and Tamil translations, and the webfont setup that makes them render cleanly on mobile, is a distinct scope item, not a small toggle.
- Timeline. A rush job pays a premium. Six-week timelines are cheaper than three-week timelines for the same scope.
- Maintenance. A monthly retainer of LKR 5,000 to LKR 25,000 for small edits and security patching is common. Skip it and you pay per-fix rates when something breaks.

Running costs are the number a lot of Sri Lankan businesses under-budget. A LKR 250,000 build with LKR 40,000 a year in running costs is a smaller total-cost surprise than a LKR 60,000 build with LKR 90,000 a year in renewals nobody explained.

Freelancer vs small studio vs agency
Freelancers, studios and agencies price the same scope differently because their cost stack is different. A solo Sri Lankan freelancer running WordPress builds does not carry office rent, account managers, or a project management overhead. A 20-person agency does. The LKR gap between them is not markup, it is real cost passed through.
For most Sri Lankan small and medium businesses, a competent freelancer or a 2 to 5 person studio is the value point. A freelancer will typically deliver a 4 to 8 page WordPress business site for LKR 60,000 to LKR 150,000, in 3 to 5 weeks, with one point of contact. A studio at the same scope will quote LKR 150,000 to LKR 400,000, ship in 4 to 8 weeks, and give you a project manager and a designer as separate people. A larger agency starts at LKR 400,000 for the same brochure site, and earns the premium only when the project is multi-team by nature: catalogue migration, integrations, brand rebuild.
The claim we push back on is that agencies charge more because they must deliver more. For a brochure site with a single decision-maker on the client side, they do not. What agencies actually give you is team backup, formal process, and a written contract you can enforce, which is genuinely worth the premium when the project has multiple moving pieces or the client side is a committee.
Hidden costs to watch for
Sri Lankan website quotations often quote a headline build number that omits five real costs. The costs are not hidden by the provider, they are hidden because nobody asks the question up front.
- Renewal pricing. Hosting sold on a heavy year-one discount often triples at renewal. Ask for the year-two number in writing.
- Content and photography. If the quotation does not name who writes the copy and shoots the products, the answer is "you", late in the project.
- Premium plugins and themes. A WooCommerce build may lean on plugins that carry USD 49 to USD 249 annual renewals. Ask for the license list before you sign.
- Payment gateway fees. PayHere and WebXPay charge roughly 2.5% to 3.5% plus a small fixed LKR fee per transaction. Setup is free to LKR 15,000 depending on business type.
