A Singapore or Mumbai host with Cloudflare feels faster to Sri Lankan visitors than a poorly provisioned Colombo box without a CDN, and choosing local should be a billing or support decision, not a speed one.

Round-trip latency is the physical constraint every host works inside. Sri Lanka's international traffic exits through submarine cables landing near Colombo and Mount Lavinia and peers regionally in Mumbai, Singapore and Chennai. Ping is a floor. Real TTFB adds the server's own render time, so a 40 ms ping to Mumbai becomes a 120 to 250 ms TTFB on WordPress depending on the plan tier.
A CDN erases location for cached pages, not for dynamic ones
Cloudflare and Bunny.net both peer inside Sri Lanka. Cached HTML, images, CSS, JavaScript and font files served through them reach a Colombo browser in 5 to 30 ms regardless of where the origin sits, because the response never leaves the country. That is why a well-configured brochure or WordPress marketing site on a Singapore host feels instant from Colombo. The moment a request bypasses the cache, WooCommerce checkout, wp-admin, a logged-in dashboard, a cart POST, a search query, the request goes to the origin and pays the full round trip. For a static blog the CDN closes 95% of the perceptible gap; for an active WooCommerce store during checkout it closes nothing.
Where a Sri Lankan host still wins
Sri Lankan hosts win on three concrete axes. First, uncached TTFB to a Colombo visitor drops from around 120 ms (Mumbai origin) to around 30 ms, which shows up in Core Web Vitals only on dynamic pages. Second, LKR billing avoids the 3% to 4% forex spread and card decline risk on international transactions from a Sri Lankan card. Third, local phone and Sinhala/Tamil support in Colombo business hours matters when the site is down and the person calling the host is not a developer. A Singapore host with Cloudflare wins on speed for cached pages; a Sri Lankan host wins for a WooCommerce checkout that must run against LKR receipts and PayHere callbacks.
The two numbers to compare before switching hosts
The measurement that settles this is real-user TTFB from Chrome's Core Web Vitals report and a cold LCP test from WebPageTest run in the region closest to Sri Lanka. Google marks TTFB under 800 ms as "good" and over 1800 ms as "poor". Anything a Sri Lankan visitor sees under 500 ms feels fast; the location decision is a question of whether the current host reaches that number for the pages that cannot be cached.
